I am not sure how many people look at the lovely scenery around them and view it in the form of textiles, but I certainly do! When I looked at the hillsides of Galashiels I could see rows of knitting and the hedges appeared as Pom Poms! So I began to make a few samples. More Pom Poms to follow! 😊 I wrote a little poem... There’ll be a pom pom in the hillside There’ll be knitting in the vales Casting on and casting off stitch And lots of woolly tails. There’ll be friendships and some sharing There’ll be selvedges in Scot Park There’ll be stylish fashion wearing And textile artists making their mark. There’ll be weaving in the weave sheds, shuttles flying by the score, In between the warp and weft threads Making tweeds, twills, and tartans galore Fabrics finished to high standards Which look and feel like love The gas machine will still be singeing To make the rough things smooth instead. This place lives because of textiles And dyes by the River Tweed All with joy and hope and great care By the cloth makers of Galashiels If you like all things textile And need to find a mercantile You’ll be in the best place for it When you visit Galashiels There’ll be a pom pom in the hillside and there’ll be the music of the mills There’ll be blessings in abundance And lots of thrills and frills. There’ll be stitching, making, mending Patchwork, quilting and crochet Textile crafts made in great quantities You should plan to come today. If fabric is your greatest passion Then weave your way a.s.a.p. to the ‘Great tapestry of Scotland’ and become a part of the legacy.

There have been many changes in Galashiels over the years and there are more changes currently taking place. While researching some of these I found an image of some of the Community leaders and realized the significance of their decisions and actions on the whole community. I considered how what can seem like small decisions or small actions can have lasting effects on a community and can affect generations to come for many years. I am basing my designs for this quilted piece on the images that I found online. This design is called "Repercussions."

I like the idea of contrasting the past, present and future. While thinking about this topic I discovered some pictures online of the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey. I also found images of the proposed new 'Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor attraction' building. I was particularly interested in the stark contrast between the architecture of the two buildings and decided to put some quick sketches into my file. I would like to develop these ideas more and create something from textiles to reflect the contrast of these building designs.
